Nuclear Waste

LANL: BANE OF THE LIVING (Tune: Me & Julio Down by the Schoolyard)

LANL is building more atom bombs –

gonna lead to annihilation

The people say NO!

’cause the people know

that the bombs are an abomination

It's against the law; United Nations law

Nukes have been outlawed

They are against the law

They poison our water, poison the air

with plutonium radiation

“Safety” they vowed, but they lied, so now

we’re demanding a complete cessation

Cease and desist!

You don't know who you’re harming

Cease and desist!

Don’t have a right to endanger us

Goodbye to LANL – bane of the living!

||: Gotta shut you down or you'll

blow up the whole world :|| [repeat]

Now our senators, both, & our governor too

gotta stop you – they must protect us

Forget the federal bucks

‘cause plutonium sucks

and remember that our lives are precious!

Cease and desist!

You don't know who you’re harming

Cease and desist!

Don’t have a right to endanger us

Goodbye to LANL – bane of the living!

||: Gotta shut you down or you'll

blow up the whole world :||  [3 times]

LIVING IN A NUCLEAR WASTELAND (Tune: Winter Wonderland)

Sirens wail, hair is bristling

children scream, pavement glistening

We've finally paid    for hell that we made

Living in a nuclear wasteland

Cancer cells in mutation

growing wild from radiation

No level is safe — Nobody is safe

Living in a nuclear wasteland

In the rubble we can build a shelter

And we’ll try surviving underground

Dreaming of the days when we were healthier

when earth had life and beauty all around

Later on we'll expire,

as we’re filled with the fire

Still singing our song, "We got it all wrong":

Dying in a nuclear wasteland

IT AIN’T NECESSARILY SO

The feds care for New Mexico

They bring lots of jobs for good dough

They always protect us

and surely respect us

It ain’t necessarily so!

In fact, they’re endangering us

Their safety controls are a bust

They make bombs in haste

and get careless with waste

They’re really not folks we can trust

Plutonium’s safe, don’t you know?

It even emits a warm glow

Though government media

would like to mislead ya,

it ain’t necessarily so!

It’s really quite deadly, it’s true

You don’t want it spilling near you

There’s worker turnover

and deaths from exposure:

you’re hoping we don’t have a clue

The “Land of Enchantment,” we say

It used to be charming that way

But now, mass destruction

is our main production

We’re more disenchanted each day

THE DOE IN NEW MEXICO (Tune: Folsom Prison)

They act like we don’t matter

here in New Mexico

Remember the explosion

at WIPP some years ago?

We’re just lucky that disaster

occurred below the ground

If it happened on the truck route,

it could have laid us all down

There will be more disasters

and radiation leaks

‘cause LANL and the DOE,

your safety record’s bleak

You have no plan to protect us

from deadly waste filled trucks

And the fact we’re still surviving

is only due to blind luck

How long will luck be with us?

You’re making more bomb cores!

And shipments of plutonium

keep rolling by our doors

Oh, the danger keeps increasing

that we’ll be sacrificed

on the weapons-makers’ altar

And that’s a terrible price

You have to stop this nonsense!

It’s pure insanity

to keep producing nukes and waste

until eternity

leaving us a barren wasteland,

where life no more will grow

You love nukes instead of people

How low can you go?

FOR OUR GRANDCHILDREN’S SAKE (Tune: Sweet Betsy from Pike)

Our nuclear weapons are sealing our fate

There’s no place to hide, there’s no place that’s safe

And we know that all life on earth is at stake

So we say NO NUKES! for our grandchildren’s sake

With hazardous radioactive pollution

for nuclear waste, there is no solution

And LANL keeps failing to clean their mess up

So that’s why we say, STOP making this stuff!

As people are suffering in desperate straits,

you’re building more bombs and inciting more hate

What kind of a world do you want to create?!

So we say NO NUKES! for our grandchildren’s sake

Oh, for our grandchildren’s sake!

NUCLEAR WASTELAND STATE (Tune: Memories by Maroon 5)

Trucks going by every day

risking the lives of the folks on the way

hauling tons and tons of plutonium

three hundred and thirty miles

Cargo of nuclear waste

nuclear waste that can blow us away

and they keep on transporting more of it

for hundreds of miles,

all likely to be defiled

WIPP was just a “pilot” program

It was never to be more

It was limited and short-term

It would close in ’24

Now they’re planning big expansion

with a deadlier-type waste

The potential for disaster

is expanding, too, apace

Everybody’s life at risk,

even people miles away

Radiation poisoning –

will it kill us all someday?

Valentine Day was the day

Ten years ago radiation did blow

in the toxic waste in the underground –

a stupid mistake, they say

How many stupid mistakes?

How many ways do they threaten our lives?

And we still don’t have any guarantees

their stupid mistakes

won’t happen again someday

Don’t make us a wasteland

No, no, don’t make us a wasteland

No, no, no, no – don’t make us a

nuclear wasteland, nuclear wasteland state
