Women's Rights songs

WOMEN POWER! (Tune: Oh, Susannah)

Now we sing for women’s unity,

we raise our voices loud

to support our sisters everywhere:

we’re women and we’re proud!

We are sisters if our skin is black,

or white or red or brown

We stand against all forms of hate,

and we will not back down

    Women power! The patriarchy’s done!

     We unite in solidarity,

     for women’s time has come!

There are women-hating men

who’ve taken power across the land

They’ve legalized misogyny,

just like the Taliban

We’ll show them that our rights

will not be taken or postponed

Our bodies are off-limits:

they're a government-free zone

     Women power! The patriarchy’s done!

     We unite in solidarity,

     for women’s time has come!

We are fearless and impassioned

and invincible and strong

We’ll build a new democracy

where everyone belongs

We’ll put progressives at its helm

and caring at its core

and never raise our children

to be fodder for men’s wars

     Women power! The patriarchy’s done!

     We unite in solidarity,

     for women’s time has come!

Women power!  We will not be ignored

We’re a force that must be reckoned with

     We’re women:  hear us ROAR!!

TAKE YOUR BANS OFF MY BODY (Tune: Take Me Out to the Ball Game)

Take your bans off my body

Leave my uterus alone

You have no right to say “yea” or “nay”

It’s my body and my final say!

And if I choose birth or abortion,

I’ll decide in my way

So keep out! - out! -  out of my choice

You can have no say!

I don’t mess with your prostate,

I won’t try to castrate

I have respect for your privacy:

Li’l blue pills and your sex fantasies

What if you could find yourself pregnant?

You would holler, “No way!”

So keep out! - out! - out of my choice!

You can have no say!

So keep out! - out! -

out of my choice!

You can have no say!

BATTLE HYMN OF WOMEN (Tune: Battle Hymn of the Republic)

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the fire of women's rage,

kept smoldering for centuries, now flaming in this age

We won’t go back to hangers and we will not be enslaved!

We’ll keep on marching on!

Now women-hating men attempt to occupy the land

They legalize misogyny just like the Taliban

They’re terrorizing women and they’re called Republicans

Their tyranny be damned!

Rise up, women!  Join together!

Solidarity forever!

We shall not retreat – not ever!

For women’s time has come!

Religious zealots bully women with Medieval rules

They think they’re doing “God’s work”

but they’re only being tools:

stooges for the power brokers – and they’re bloody cruel!

But us they will not rule!

They want to take us back

to when the only rights were men’s

They want to choose how many kids we have & even when

And what we wear, from burkas to bikinis, just for them

These edicts we condemn!

Rise up, women!  Join together!

Solidarity forever!

We shall not retreat – not ever!

For women’s time has come!

So listen, boys, our rights will not be taken or postponed

Our bodies are off-limits: they're a government-free zone

My bedroom and my right to choose are mine and mine alone

No, we shall not be owned!

The patriarchy’s over now; we claim our rightful pow’r

Let’s build a new society, with caring at its core

and never raise our children to be fodder for men’s wars

For women’s time has come!

   Rise up, women!  Join together!

Solidarity forever!

We shall not retreat – not ever!

For women’s time has come!

IT AIN’T NECESSARILY SO (Original tune by Gershwin)

The freedoms and rights that we know

They ain’t necessarily so

We always expected our rights were respected

It ain’t necessarily so

For years they were packing the courts

to make it a crime to abort

& all the Republicans just like to drub women:

crushing our rights is a sport

Alito said, “Nix privacy!”

He likes to see brutality

Beer Brett is a fool, Clarence Thomas a tool

They seem to love theocracy

And judge Amy Coat-hanger Barrett

was rammed through regardless of merit

‘cause she was selected to betray her sex

She’s a partisan hack like the rest

We’re under attack - this is war!

Our lives are what we’re fighting for!

What we need this hour are women in power

to show all the sexists the door!

THE LAWS THEY ARE A-CHANGING (Tune: The Times They Are A-Changing)

Come gather ‘round people, we want you to hear

about losing the freedoms we’ve come to hold dear

Religious Supremes work to turn back the years

And the harm that they do is wide-ranging

Now it’s time for our protests to shift into gear

For the laws they are a-changing!

Now five right-wing zealots presume to decree

that our laws must be based on defunct history

1789 is the year that they see

as the golden age they’re re-creating:

back before civil rights when just rich men were free

But it’s they who should be changing!

Young women who grew up with freedoms don’t know

how savage it gets under right-wing control

But we who lived through it, our battle scars show:

there’s a reason for all of this raging

There isn’t a bottom to how low they’ll go

and the laws, they are a-changing!

WOMEN OF THE WORLD UNITE (Tune: Ode To Joy, Beethoven)

Step by step and ever forward

though the road be dark and long

Keep on marching ever forward

Women of the world, be strong!

For our sisters ev-er-y-where

we lift up our voices, make them ring

Women of the world together

For the rights of all, we sing

We shall end the pain and sorrow,

drive the dark of fear away

Help our sisters claim their power

We begin anew today

It’s our time to claim victory

together we join to light the night!

Open doors ‘till all are free

Oh, women of the world unite!

Step by step and ever forward

Onward ‘til we’ve won the fight

Arm in arm, we’re strong together

women of the world unite!

FREEDOM UNDER ASSAULT (Tune: Marine Corps Hymn)

They’re intent on killing free-e-doms,

and it’s more than Roe v. Wade

They want state control of women

and they want us all afraid

They assault female autonomy

and it’s more than forcing birth

‘cause they see us as their property

and our lives do not have worth

When they talk about the “right to life,”

they mean fetuses unborn

After birth some babies have no rights

and the mother’s life is scorned

If they cared about life’s ”sanctity”

they’d end massacres in schools,

end the homelessness and poverty -

But instead they’re just plain cruel

We must start a revolution

to reclaim our civil rights

We will stop this persecution

And it’s gonna be a fight

We will not live in the Handmaid’s Tale

We refuse to be abused

We will not be terrorized by males

We’ll be free to live and choose!
